How to Care for Your Ornamental Plants

Watering:

The plant should be deep-watered twice a week for the first month, once a week for the next 3-4 months, and then twice a month during the summer (or drought periods)—water by hand. Sprinklers will not work. Shrubs need 2-3 gallons, and Trees need 5-10 gallons per watering. Add Neptune’s Harvest Fish/Seaweed Liquid Plant Food when you hand water during the summer months for even greater success.

Fertilizing:

All plants must be fed a complete fertilizer in spring after bloom or as new growth begins and again in fall after the first frost (Around Oct. 15th). We recommend using Espoma Organic Fertilizers, Holly-tone, Tree-tone, Rose-tone and Plant-tone.

Insect Pest:

Protect your ornamental plants and trees from insects with a preventive systemic insecticide. Treat 3 times starting in May approx. every 6 weeks and continue until August. Use Bonide Systemic Insecticide. Systemic treatments last 6 weeks and won’t wash away. For a safe, natural preventive treatment, use All Season Horticultural Oil spray.

Disease Prevention:

Protect plants from disease-causing fungus. Use preventative fungicide. Treat monthly from May through August. Increase treatments if the major disease appears or as rainfall increases. Use Bonide Sulfur Plant Fungicide or Bayer Rose and Flower 3 in 1 Spray. Kills insects and prevents disease with one treatment.

Special Care Plants:

(Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Dogwoods) These spring bloomers need well-drained, acid soil high in organic matter and a shady location. When planting, position plants so the root ball is approximately 1 inch above the grade, then mound the topsoil/planting mix up to the original soil surface of the plant. This will allow for extra drainage. The goal is, Do Not Plant Too Deep.
